Hello lovely readers!
First off, as you may have noticed, I have not been posting for the past month or so. I was finishing my surgery rotation, studying for final shelf exams, and finally getting to take a much deserved and needed break.
BUT at last, I am back and more energized than I was a few weeks ago 😀.
Every year, it has been my mission to actually leave for the holidays, but this year I decided (mostly because I had no time to plan) that I would be taking a stay-cation. To this end, I have been going around town mostly eating and drinking tons of coffee, but also taking in the views, smells, feels of the city. This was really needed on my end because I always forget that I live in this city, so it was nice to realize that outside my microcosm there exists this gigantic city. I’ve also been catching up with friends and family, getting dinner and drinks, and just enjoying feeling young in this city.
In doing this, I’ve also been thinking a lot about the future.
The thing about NYC is that there is always this feeling of possibilities that the city exudes and which has been my life for the past decade or so. I feel as though the city just paralleled my life because I decided to keep all of my options open- I did grad school, now I am doing medical school- and even though grad school led me to commit to Immunology/Biology, I can really do anything with my PhD.
The thing about choices or possibilities is that you never have to make a concrete decision.
BUT for the first time in the last decade, I will have to choose what specialty of medicine I will be applying into come Fall. This has added a bit of stress to my winter break because I just started my clinical year six months ago and, although, it has been one of the funnest and most challenging things I have done, I have not fallen completely in love or hated any of the rotations I have done.
In thinking a lot about this future decision, I’ve been thinking about my age, the type of lifestyle that I want in the future, choosing something that I love, the city where I want to live, and then just the practical aspects of it all. I feel as though this city and I are coming full circle. Sitting in various restaurants and cafes, I’ve really felt in touch with it and I’ve felt as though the city and I have grown up together and now we need to start making more grown up decisions.
My conclusion has been that this decision is going to be a tough one. I am finally at a point where being a trainee is not going to last forever and I need to start really thinking about what I want as a career in the future. I’ll take you guys along for the ride, but I really hope that it isn’t too painful 😄.
Anyway, as I said, I’ve been going out and about trying to enjoy myself during this break, so here is a day in my life and something you guys can do if you are around for the holidays next year.
- I decided to head downtown to Union Square to get a look at the Holiday market there. I walked around for a bit, got super hungry, and decided to go to Republic Noddle Shop for lunch. Republic noodle shop is huge and they have an open, communal style of eating. In other words, you will seat next to strangers, but this is ok, because their noodle bowls are so tasty and will warm you up in this frigid NYC weather.
- After eating, I decided to go back to the market and get dessert. So I ended up buying some doughnuts from a stand called Doughnuterry. The doughnuts were okay but the toppings on them made them delicious. They were all giving out free hot chocolate, so the combination of both just hit the spot.
- I finally ended my trip by walking through the Union Square Farmer’s market which was right next to the Holiday Market. This is available year round and I love the farmers’ market because of their fresh produce and bread. I got a few apples, got to taste some amazing apple cider and got some organic whole grain bread, which made me really happy because apples are my favorite fruit.
What have you been up to?
Happy Holidays to everyone! I hope that your holidays have been a time to rest and spend time with family and friends. More posts are coming soon. In the meantime, I am on instagram now so follow me @alittlebitofeverything.nyc
